Start getting ready, everyone - DVDs set up to start at 6pm BST exactly!

And there was great joy and excitement all through the lands :)
A broader question for before the film starts, or afterwards :)
(As long afterwards as you like, it's still interesting)
The general opinion seems to be that the film catches the spirit of the books very well, if not necessarily sticking to the letter. And of course there are a lot of little details from the books in there, as well as some changes.
What do people think? Is it close? Are there things you think could have been done better, or things you would have liked to see - or are there things you prefer from the film?
(In some ways I suppose a looser adaptation is easier to deal with - less scope for people complaining about details changed or missed, since the changes are so broad.)
And what do you think is film canon? Chronologically this is roughly HMS Surprise time, thematically it possibly has slightly more to do with The Mauritius Command (stopping the French from getting a foothold in a new area). And of course there are the two books it was named for.
What has happened before the film? It doesn't slot directly into the books, but have some of the same things happened? Have some things not? (There are a few hints in the film, of course.)
I'll comment my own thoughts when I get a chance...
If you don't know what time that will be in your time zone, the time zone map is here
in our profile, as (almost) always!
nor I will be here, so it's up to you
, dear reader, to make the squee! Can you do it? Yes you can!
Post this announcement anywhere you like. Tell your friends, tell your mom, tell your admiral. (Yes, you! You can do it. We've raised you well. You know what to do by now.)
PS - Here's a countdown timer
Would anyone be up for another watch, to celebrate the current rumours?
(Or just because it's fun. It's not really tempting fate, because even if nothing happens we still had the fun of the watch... *looks for wood*)
I would suggest Sunday 9th August, because a) it's the weekend after mandc_read
finishes The Surgeon's Mate
, and b) I'm not in Argyll or Scone or on the Irish Sea that weekend. But other dates could work.
Comments? Squee? Better dates?
I know there was one not long ago, but I think a few people couldn't make it then :)
In the best possible way. I cannot believe that there is such a community. I wish I'd discovered this a few days ago; I'd have ecstatically joined in the watch. At which my family would have laughed uproariously. But thank you for creating this community, whoever did, and I will watch next time. I saw something about it being the 5-year anniversary -- what day is that exactly? Anyway, this is quite exciting.
- Music:I'm humming the Corelli piece that was in the movie.
Alright, everyone, start getting ready.
Here's the countdown timer: keep it open somewhere

Late notification, I know, but what would you all say to just a Master and Commander dedicated weekend?
The film on Saturday,
The extras on Sunday.
I know I'll be making some art for the occasion, maybe we can rustle up some fic? Hang up some decorations and get embarrassingly tipsy.
Good idea/bad idea?
So it looks like the next Watch will be THIS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15th!
Write it down in your Outlook calendars, people!
Souls, honeys, my particular friends!
A one question poll here...
When can you make it for a celebratory viewing next weekend?
The time will be the usual 3pm UK time. You can calculate for your own location what time that would be.
Just setting this up so we can make as many people happy as we possibly can. :D
EDIT: ahem, Sunday the 16th, obviously. I suck.
so rightly reminded us over at perfect_duet
her journal, in two weeks it will have been five years since Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was released in theatres!
Wow, five years already. Opuntia fandomii,
very hard to eradicate.
I think this deserves some sort of anniversary viewing.
Now, since the 14th actually falls on a Friday, we might scoot it over a day or two to make sure as many people as possible can join in, but what do you say, who's up for another Watch?
Ayes to the right, Noes to the left!
We're going to postpone the viewing of the movie. Date to be announced at a later date, to be announced later.
If you have urgent scheduling requests, you may make them known and they may be considered, subject to the requirements of service. We apologize for this delay. Good day to you!
the Watch will be soon upon us! Three cheers for the Watch!
The countdown timer is here
. Keep an eye on it! We start the SECOND it hits zero, to make sure we're all watching it as um... togetherly.. as we possibly can. There is also a ticker on the profile page. :D
